Knowledge Network Service Migration Update

Beverly Bryant - CIO of the Department of Health and former chair of the Knowledge Network Management Board

The new GSi Knowledge Network makes the concept of shared services a reality and delivers benefits, savings and quality of service for customers. There is a real and ongoing requirement for Government Departments to share knowledge and information. Although the Knowledge Network has moved a long way towards addressing this need, the move to a commercial partnership will improve the experience for customers from the perspective of cost and improved certainty of delivery.

Knowledge Network Community

One community already hosted on the GSi is the Knowledge Network, recently transferred from the e-GU (part of the Cabinet Office).

Knowledge Network up and running

Knowledge Network users now benefit from a new service architecture across 28 servers to enhance performance with clustering for better resilience. Through shared network and firewall facilities, all hosted at the secure, List X Cable&Wireless data centre in Swindon, user costs have fallen and service reliability improved. Our thanks to SciSys and Cable&Wireless for the successful migration of the initial 20 applications to the new infrastructure in December 2006.
